Pest Control in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs
A European wasp nest in a Ferntree Gully retaining wall, termites working up through the mulch in a Glen Waverley garden bed, rats coming out of the reserve behind a Warrandyte block — the east has the most established gardens and the most bushland edge in Melbourne, and both show up in what we get called for. We cover Kew and Hawthorn out to Lilydale and the foothills.

The pests we get called out for most in Melbourne’s east
What sets the east apart is vegetation. This is the greenest quarter of Melbourne, and almost everything we treat here traces back to that.
The established middle east — Box Hill, Blackburn, Mount Waverley, Glen Waverley, Doncaster, Balwyn — is largely 1950s to 1970s brick veneer on generous blocks with mature gardens. Decades of deep mulch, garden beds built up against the render, established trees, timber retaining walls and old sleeper edging give termites moisture, cover and a path to the building that a newer estate simply does not offer. This is the part of Melbourne where we find the most concealed termite activity.
Further out, Ferntree Gully, Boronia, Rowville, Croydon, Mooroolbark, Lilydale and Warrandyte sit against genuine bushland — the Dandenong Ranges foothills and the Yarra Valley. Bushland interface changes the picture: European wasps in numbers, rodents moving in from reserves as the weather turns, and more spider pressure than the inner suburbs see.
And the inner east — Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell, Canterbury, Surrey Hills, Glen Iris — is Edwardian and Federation housing with original floorboards, wool carpets and subfloor voids, which brings wood borer and carpet beetles into the mix alongside termites. Box Hill and Glen Waverley add something different again: high-rise apartments and dense food precincts, which behave like the inner city rather than the suburbs around them.
Termites
The most common and most expensive problem in the east. Mature gardens are the reason: mulch and garden beds banked against the render, timber sleepers and retaining walls in ground contact, established trees holding moisture, and subfloors in the older stock. The first sign most owners see is a mud tube on a stump or pier, or a skirting board that gives under thumb pressure. Termites are active all year in Melbourne, so there is no season to wait for. If your home is pre-1980, or you have a garden that has been growing for thirty years, book an inspection.

European wasps
Heavier here than anywhere else we work, and the reason is the bushland edge through Knox, Maroondah and the Yarra Ranges. Nests go into wall cavities, under eaves, inside retaining walls and into ground banks, and the ones found in autumn have usually been building since spring. March and April are the peak. A nest near a back door, a play area or an outdoor dining space is a genuine hazard rather than a nuisance — and a disturbed European wasp nest defends itself in numbers. Do not try to treat one yourself.

Rats and mice
April through August is our heaviest stretch. In the foothills and along the Yarra they come out of reserves and bushland as the nights get cold and move into roof spaces and subfloors; properties backing onto a reserve get them earlier and more often than neighbours two streets away. Mature trees touching the roof line are a common way in, and one most people never think to check. Scratching overhead at night, droppings in the pantry, chewed insulation or cabling — cabling is the reason not to wait it out.
Spiders
December through March, and more of it near the bush. Established gardens, woodpiles, sheds, retaining walls and dense planting give spiders everywhere to shelter, and redbacks turn up under outdoor furniture, in letterboxes and around pool pumps. A perimeter treatment before Christmas is cheaper and easier than dealing with an established population in February.
Ants
Spring and summer. Old paths, established paving and long-settled slabs crack and shift, and ants follow those gaps in from nests in the garden. Spraying the trail on the benchtop achieves nothing lasting — the nest is outside, and treating it is the only thing that works.
Cockroaches
Concentrated around Box Hill and Glen Waverley, where apartment towers and dense food precincts behave like the inner city. German cockroaches move between apartments through shared plumbing and wall cavities, so treating one unit while the adjoining ones are untreated relocates the population for a few weeks rather than solving it. If you are a building manager or owners corporation, ask us about treating the stack.
Wood borer and carpet beetles
The inner east problem. Original hardwood floorboards, joists and skirtings in Federation and Edwardian homes through Hawthorn, Kew, Camberwell and Canterbury are what borers attack — fine powder beneath small round exit holes is the tell. Wool carpets, rugs and stored woollens in the same houses feed carpet beetles and clothes moths, and the bare patches along skirtings usually get blamed on wear and tear. Worth checking borer before you sand and polish floors, not after.

Commercial pest control in Melbourne’s east
Box Hill and Glen Waverley carry two of the densest food precincts in Melbourne, and the shopping centres through Doncaster, Ringwood, Chadstone’s eastern edge and Knox add food courts and retail tenancies. Bayswater, Knoxfield and Scoresby bring light industrial and warehousing. The east also has an unusually high concentration of schools and aged care, both of which need documented programmes rather than callouts.
We run scheduled, HACCP-compliant programmes: mapped bait and monitor stations, a set service frequency, a written report after every visit, and records that stand up in an audit or a council inspection. We have operated a documented OHS management system since 2019 — which is what school, council and government contracts generally require before they will engage you — and we hold ongoing contract work in the education sector.

What happens when we come out
- Inspection. We check the affected area plus the likely entry and harbourage points — subfloor, roof space, garden beds and mulch lines, retaining walls, and anywhere holding moisture.
- Identification. We confirm the species. It matters more in the east than most places: borer damage is not termite damage, and a European wasp nest is not treated like a bee swarm.
- Plan and quote. You get the approach and the price before anything is applied.
- Treatment. Most residential jobs run one to two hours. We tell you beforehand whether you or your pets need to be out, and for how long.
- Follow-up. A written report, a warranty on the work, and a follow-up visit where the treatment calls for one.
Why customers across Melbourne’s east use AusWide
The business is led by a qualified field biologist and entomologist. In established homes with mature gardens, where borer, carpet beetle and termite damage all get confused for one another, correct identification is the difference between fixing the problem and paying twice.
We know the bushland edge. Properties backing onto reserves need the perimeter and the roof line treated as the front line, not an afterthought.
Licensed and insured. Victorian pest control licence A023808, ABN 67 623 817 970, full public liability and professional indemnity cover — certificate of currency available on request.

Eastern suburbs pest control questions
Why do we get so many European wasps out this way?
The bushland edge. Through Knox, Maroondah and the Yarra Ranges there is enough undisturbed ground, timber and cavity space for nests to establish and go unnoticed until autumn, when the colony is at its largest. It is a feature of living near the foothills rather than anything you have done. If you find one, keep people away from it and call — they defend a disturbed nest in numbers.
My garden is established and beautiful. Is that a termite risk?
It can be, and this is the single most common cause we see in the east. Deep mulch and garden beds banked up against the render bridge straight past whatever termite barrier the house has, and timber sleepers and retaining walls in ground contact give termites a food source right at the building. You do not need to tear the garden out — but you do need the mulch line kept below the weep holes, and an annual inspection.
We back onto a reserve and get rats every winter. Can that be stopped?
Managed rather than stopped, honestly. The reserve is a permanent population and you are the warm dry building next to it. Baiting handles what has already moved in; the lasting work is sealing entry points and cutting back any branches touching the roof line, which is how most of them get up there in the first place.
Do you cover Lilydale, Mooroolbark and Warrandyte?
Yes, along with Chirnside Park, Croydon and the Knox suburbs. If you are up into the Dandenongs proper — Olinda, Sassafras, Kallista — call first and we will tell you honestly whether we can get to you and when.
I’m in an apartment in Box Hill and my neighbour has cockroaches.
Then you will have them shortly, if you do not already. German cockroaches travel between apartments through shared plumbing and cavities. Treating your unit alone buys a few weeks. Ask your owners corporation or building manager to arrange a building-level treatment — we can quote that and coordinate access.
Are your treatments safe around children and pets?
The products we use are registered for residential use and applied by a licensed technician at label rates. We tell you before we start whether anyone needs to be out of the house and for how long — usually a couple of hours for an internal treatment, and often not at all for external perimeter work.
